With PULSE, Select Projects guides hospitals in the transition to PIC/S standards - people-oriented, customised, and with an eye for affordable & sustainable quality.

From January 2026, new quality standards will apply in Belgium for preparations made in hospital pharmacies: the international PIC/S PE010-4 guideline, based on Annex 1. Whereas this used to be a theoretical frame of reference, it will now become an assessment tool during FAGG inspections. The stakes? More patient safety, fewer risks in aseptic preparations, and a structural increase in quality.

This transition is not just about infrastructure. It requires vision, support, insight and guidance. And that is exactly where Select Projects makes the difference. With the PULSE process (PIC/S Upgrade & Lean Strategy Execution), we guide hospital pharmacies step by step towards sustainable compliance. Not just by advising, but by really working together. Together, we arrive at an optimal solution, not only in terms of investment and operational costs, but also in terms of operational needs.

Thinking ahead is more than just building or renovating

Building a new cleanroom is a nice step, but not a guarantee of quality. Many hospital pharmacies today invest in infrastructure, but may lack an integrated approach: streamlined processes, shared quality values and well-considered contamination control. This is where PULSE proves its added value.

Since the end of 2024, we have launched joint kick-off and in-depth workshops in several hospitals as the first phase of the journey. These sessions include gap analysis, risk identification and building a supported action plan. Select Projects works together with several hospital pharmacies that are already willing to think ahead and act according to the new PIC/S standards.

"These hospital pharmacists tackle change with an open mind and enthusiasm - always paying attention to quality and feasibility, both in terms of training and daily operations," says Heidi Vanderheyden, one of the experts involved.

During these workshops, we regularly notice that a number of existing processes are not yet sufficiently in line with the new standards. This need not be a stumbling block, as long as there is a willingness to change.

"That is why we always start by listening, analysing and working together on a plan that is both feasible and effective," saysPriscilla, Commercial Project Director at Select Projects.

What does PULSE entail?

PULSE is not a standard package, but a flexible and modular guidance path. Always adapted to the reality of your hospital pharmacy. The focus is on affordable and sustainable quality, no expensive solutions out of proportion.

Our path proceeds in logical phases:

  • GAP and risk analysis: where are you today? Where are the risks? We map it out clearly.
  • Step-by-step practical action plan with clear priorities: Focused on impact and feasibility. What needs to be done now, what can be done later.
  • Contamination control strategy (CCS) as a common thread: worked out to measure, as a foundation for quality assurance.
  • Implementation support: Think quality manuals, risk analyses, deviation/CAPA or change management, training plans and inspection preparation.
  • Education & training: Tailored training courses: from basic GxP and microbiology to hands-on aseptic working. We ensure your team is competent according to the latest PIC/S PE 010-4 guidelines and can work professionally in controlled environments.
  • Cleanroom - advice & design: Technical support for future-proof new-build projects, focusing on flows, compliance and future-oriented thinking. We think along from the first sketch, so that bottlenecks can be avoided and do not have to be justified later via risk analyses or complex work-arounds. Think PIC/S-specific URS.

The first five steps are relevant for any hospital pharmacy - both within existing infrastructure and in trajectories involving new construction. The sixth block (cleanroom consultancy & design) is specific to projects working on new or to be renovated cleanrooms.

Partnership in practice

What makes PULSE different is the combination of substantive expertise and people-oriented guidance. Project management and quality expertise go hand in hand. We work not only for pharmacy teams, but especially with them. Our approach is transparent; cooperation with integrity is central.

"It's about building trust. We don't do that with pressure or standard models, but through genuine cooperation." - Priscilla Verjans

Even after the intensive process is over, we remain available. Think monthly follow-up, coaching or targeted assistance with inspections, for example. Our ambition: a long-term relationship in which your hospital pharmacy can continue to evolve autonomously and qualitatively.

Meet the PULSE team

Behind PULSE is a multidisciplinary team of experienced professionals with a shared mission: to help hospital pharmacies grow towards sustainable quality care. Each team member brings specific expertise essential in guiding this complex transition. Some of our PULSE team members:

  • Priscilla V. - Project leader.
Priscilla brings more than 15 years of experience, mostly from regulated pharma environments. She has a proven track record in e.g. project management, operational excellence, inspection readiness (FAGG, FDA...), contamination control and process validation. Her strength lies in quickly switching between strategic advice and operational execution. Thanks to her technical-scientific background and pragmatic approach, she knows how to effectively build bridges between the hospital and pharmaceutical world.

  • Heidi Vanderheyden - Quality expert.
Heidi started her studies as a pharmacy assistant and continued her education in industrial chemistry. Her professional career started in quality control within the pharmaceutical industry, where she further developed her passion for quality and process optimisation. Meanwhile, she grew into an expert in quality management and process improvement within regulated environments. She is known for her empathic and hands-on guidance. In processes such as PULSE, she brings not only substantive depth, but also the necessary human finesse to get teams on board for change.

  • Kristof Tersago - Cleanroom Project Engineer.
Kristof has extensive experience in cleanroom design and optimisation within the pharmaceutical, food and chemical sectors. In addition to his knowledge of technical flows and regulations, he offers valuable insights into operational efficiency and flexibility for the future."Through the PULSE team, I can apply my years of experience in the pharmaceutical sector in a new way by questioning standard solutions and looking at what the world of hospital pharmacies really needs," says Kristof Tersago.

  • Liesbeth Bouchet - Expert contamination control & microbiology.
Liesbeth is an expert in contamination control and microbiology within GMP environments. She co-founded the CCS and currently works as a cross-contamination expert. Among other things, she supports sampling planning, CCS documentation and training on microbiology, LAF and cleaning. "True quality arises when awareness starts from patient care, not from obligation," says Liesbeth.
